User manual, software version 1.x
2026-07-06
Starting in autumn 2026, the software for the spacemic will be replaced, resulting in a simpler, more flexible workflow. The new software is currently in beta. For information about the currently stable software, version 0.9.x, please refer to the user manual.
The spacemic has been designed to produce an ambisonic signal. When connected to a USB host device, it identifies as an audio device with 84 channels. This 84 channel audio signal is the raw signal. This has to be encoded as an ambisonic signal, which is a multichannel audio signal with fewer channels than the raw signal. The number of channels depends on the required spatial resolution of the recording, and in the case of the spacemic is up to 36.
The ambisonic signal can then processed and converted into any kind of spatial audio format using 3rd party software.
The spacemic ambisonic encoder is provided in two software formats:
- An iOS / Android app which encodes the raw audio in real time and stores it as an audio file on the mobile device
- A VST3 / AU / AAX plugin
The app is easy to use and intended for field recording and simple studio recording, while the plugin provides flexibility for complex studio configurations.
